Why Force English?
]
Like India, Nigeria has a rich language diversity. However, English is encroaching on their traditional foothold due to focus on education using English medium. Students have been flogged for speaking their mother tongue.
This is similar to policies by Indian states like Uttar Pradesh changing medium of instruction for 15,000 Hindi-medium schools to English from primary level (this is despite the National Education Policy 2020).
There is strong evidence that learning in students' mother tongue improves learning outcomes and provides academic advantage. It also leads to greater inclusion, keeps local culture from being lost entirely and protects students forming an acute identity crisis due to forced learning in other language.
